{"id":10432,"date":"2020-03-31T23:23:40","date_gmt":"2020-03-31T23:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=10432"},"modified":"2020-03-31T23:29:38","modified_gmt":"2020-03-31T23:29:38","slug":"canadas-shared-border-with-the-united-states-has-officially-closed-to-non-essential-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=10432","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s shared border with the United States has officially closed to non-essential travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>  regulated Canadian immigration consultant Kerry Molitor who\u2019s representing clients affected\u00a0by the closure of Canada-U.S. border said COVID-19 has thrown the immigration industry into chaos.<\/p>\n<p>She said many people have been contacting her to extend their stays because they don&#8217;t want to or can&#8217;t leave Canada right now.<\/p>\n<p>Molitor has clients stranded outside Canada who can&#8217;t get in, and even one client stranded here, in Ontario who can&#8217;t get out because Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) seized his passport and they&#8217;re closed.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the client had been working without authorization in Canada, and was booked for an admissibility hearing, however, all hearings are now on hold.<\/p>\n<p>Molitor said that her client was ready to leave Canada, but now that the border is closed, he is now stranded here without a job and money.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said irregular migrants will also be turned back to the U.S. when they reach the Canadian border.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump said he is considering sending troops to the Canadian border to catch people who have crossed illegally into the United States, in a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>It would be a mistake for the United States to position troops near the Canadian border, said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking from outside his home.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, the border has been non-militarized and it\u2019s in everyone\u2019s best interest to keep it that way, he said. The closing of the border is already enough, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau said this is not a time to be going to the border and crossing over because it presents a risk to them and to others.<\/p>\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-full pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>Anyone attempting to cross the border for tourism or recreational reasons will be turned away,\u201d acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf said in a press release.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>Wolf said this collaborative measure, which will be in place for 30 days, will limit its spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Sofia Salituro, a Canadian citizen who\u2019ve recently went to England and France from March\u00a01-13, said she agreed with the closing of the Canada-U.S. border.<\/p>\n<p>As far of the troops that is highly unnecessary as the U.S has much bigger things to worry about than the threat of Canada, said Salituro.<\/p>\n<p>She said saw an article in the CBC with the headline, &#8220;U.S. coronavirus cases now highest in the world,&#8221; and this confirmed that there\u2019s more of a danger there than Canadians crossing the border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are far more people crossing from the U.S. to Canada than the opposite way,\u201d said Salituro.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A regulated Canadian immigration consultant Kerry Molitor who\u2019s representing clients affected\u00a0by the closure of Canada-U.S. border said COVID-19 has thrown the immigration industry into chaos.
