{"id":10438,"date":"2020-04-01T00:18:48","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T00:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=10438"},"modified":"2020-04-01T00:19:10","modified_gmt":"2020-04-01T00:19:10","slug":"will-toronto-shelter-services-funding-for-refugee-claimants-end-by-march-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=10438","title":{"rendered":"Will Toronto shelter services funding for refugee claimants end by March 2020?"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">T<\/span>he manager of homelessness initiatives, Milton Barrera is critical about advanced planning and expressed serious concerns about what happens by the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>Barrera said the city of Toronto is figuring out the budget on how many million dollars it\u2019s going to cost to house refugees and refugee claimants in shelters and hotels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current surge in shelter demand shows no sign of slowing, but instead appears it will continue significantly beyond March 2020,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2016 and onwards Barrera has seen a high increase of asylum claimants and refugees who\u2019ve occupied a number of shelter spots in Toronto. The flow of refugees in shelters increased and hotel programs were then created. Almost 13,000 individual refugees and asylum claimants accessed shelter services between Jan. 1, 2018 and July 24, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Barrera said that if funding is no longer continued shelter staff wouldn\u2019t be able to send families into different regions in a coordinated response. He added that it would be left to Toronto to try to navigate that by themselves.<\/p>\n<p>A Conservative MP Peter Kent raising concerns about thousands of government sponsored Syrian refugees are living in shelters or supports because they haven\u2019t had the support to integrate into communities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-full pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p> \u201cHousing is a huge problem for the refugee population,\u201d Kent said. The capacity of the county to accept unlimited number of immigrants or refugees just isn\u2019t there, he added. \u00a0 <\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>Hessam Ghadaki, the president at Times Group Corporation said there\u2019s a lot of stakeholders involved to make sure that the relocation of the families is successful.<\/p>\n<p>Ghadaki is responsible for marketing and leasing at this corporation. He said he also manages all legal affairs from development and construction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCity of Toronto shelter support housing should and will have the budget to provide shelter\u00a0and housing for asylum and refugee claimants,\u201d Ghadaki said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would be surprised if the government didn\u2019t continue to fund shelter for refugees moving forward,\u201d said Barrera.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The manager of homelessness initiatives, Milton Barrera is critical about advanced planning and expressed serious concerns about what happens by the end of the month.
