{"id":11756,"date":"2020-02-10T10:00:30","date_gmt":"2020-02-10T10:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=11756"},"modified":"2020-11-11T21:52:11","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T21:52:11","slug":"risk-remains-low-the-novel-coronavirus-in-ontario","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=11756","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Risk remains low\u2019: The novel coronavirus in Ontario"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">A<\/span>s of Feb. 8, 2020, seven cases of the 2019 novel <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been confirmed in Canada- three in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ontario<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and four in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Columbia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the federal government\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Ontario, a husband and wife from Toronto both tested positive for the new coronavirus, along with a woman in her 20s from London, Ont. (Matthew Chong, 2020)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease physician<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at Toronto General Hospital said that even though the risk remains \u201cextraordinarily low, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we still have to be aware and alert and stay up to date.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-full pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWe know that we live in an interconnected world. We know there is transfer as people travel,\u201d Bogoch said. \u201cEven with the current restrictions there&#8217;s still a lot of global travel and we should not be surprised if there are more cases imported to Canada.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The single most common question that doctors have received in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak is whether or not to wear a mask in public. Dr. Bogoch said that masks \u201cdon\u2019t significantly reduce the risk of getting an infection.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour risk of acquiring this infection in Canada today is close to zero per cent,\u201d said Bogoch.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bogoch often said that he had to be careful with his words because the virus is still very new and did not want to make any assumptions. He said that he did not know who is or is not most vulnerable to the virus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEarly data suggests that maybe, we\u2019ve got to be careful with our words, maybe older individuals with other medical conditions may be more prone to severe infections. (Matthew Chong, 2020)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an email statement, the Ministry of Health spokesperson David Jensen reiterated that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk to Ontarians \u201cremains low.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statement from Jensen read that as of Feb. 6, \u201cthe number of negative cases increased &#8211; now up to 104 &#8211; as both the Public Health Ontario Laboratory and the National Microbiological Laboratory confirmed negative test results.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe anticipate the overall number of Ontarians who will be tested for 2019 novel coronavirus to increase as authorities continue to screen and test individuals who meet the current case definition which include symptoms and travel history to Hubei province,\u201d the statement read.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Ontarians noted that they were concerned about the novel coronavirus spreading globally. On <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jan. 20, 2020, there were only 282 confirmed cases worldwide.
