Sadly, for Guelph-Humber students, none opened on this campus.

The GH Café located on the campus of Guelph-Humber, was the only easily accessible eater available to students. However, it has been shut down from the beginning of the pandemic. As Guelph-Humber students have returned to in-person classes, they face challenges from the lack of food availability on campus and wonder when the reopening will happen

Katie Evans is the foodservice manager for Compass Group Canada and represents Humber North. In an email interview with Evans, she said “the Food Emporium at Humber will be under construction and is in the process of having everything moved out.” “Things are in process and Covid really changed things for everyone, but we are planning for the reopening of the GH Café after the holidays in January 2022.”

Liana Acri-Rosa is a Student Life coordinator, who represents the Student Life team said, “not all eateries on campus are open this semester due to the lower volume of people on campus.”

Humber students have more options. Humber college has reopened a few options despite the Food Emporium closure. You may be in luck if you are looking for a quick-pick-me. “Starbucks, Gourmet Express, Ackee Tree and the Street Café are open in the meantime,” said Evans.

Students can now grab a small bite or a cup of coffee from the Starbucks in the LRC-1 building at Humber College. Starbucks reopened on Oct. 18, 2021 since the pandemic closure.

Additionally, you can find student-produced gourmet meals on the go and a few beverages options at Humber’s Gourmet Express located in the E-1 building, which reopened on Sept. 20, 2021.

If you are craving an authentic Jamaican meal, you can stop by the Ackee Tree in the E-1, down the hall from the Gourmet Express. The Ackee Tree offers students a variety of meals, including patties and jerk chicken to name a few.

The Street Café remains to be the most popular spot for Guelph-Humber students. This is because it is located minutes away from the connecting bridge between both campuses.

Many students at Guelph-Humber face a long walk of having to cross over to visit the neighbour campus of Humber College to buy something to eat or drink. Guelph-Humber students may be going hungry to class because they do not have time to get to Humber.

Isabel Sadowski is a student at Guelph-Humber who is feeling the effects of the GH Café closure. Sadowski said, “during my class breaks I would like to buy a snack, but I can’t, which is frustrating because the walk to Humber College is far, and my break would be over by the time I return.”

Students were already facing the challenge of the GH Café closure, but as reading week approached it got worse.

Alexus Vanderpool-Fernandes is another student at Guelph-Humber and expresses her frustration from the additional food closure during Humber College’s reading week. Vanderpool-Fernandes said, “when Humber College was on their reading week, they shut down their food spots too and the vending machines at Guelph-Humber are empty.”

Guelph-Humber students, including Vanderpool-Fernandes were left with no food options on either campus. Vanderpool-Fernandes additionally said, “some days I don’t have time to pack food, or I am exhausted and because of the closure I am not able to buy something at school.”

As for the food availability at Humber College, the campus shut down both the Food Emporium and the Hawks Nest, the two food courts, due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Food Emporium served as one of the prime locations for students to purchase food.

Ultimately, the Food Emporium at Humber College is in the process of moving out and the GH Café at Guelph Humber is anticipating the reopening in January 2022. Guelph-Humber students who want to buy food or beverages on campus in the meanwhile have no choice but to visit Humber’s campus until early next year.

The pandemic shut down all food eateries at both the University of Guelph-Humber and Humber College.
