Making the dreams of creators, who hope to break into the fashion industry, come true in one special night to celebrate fashion<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFashion Art Toronto was born as an \u2018anti-fashion week\u2019. This doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s against fashion, or Fashion Week,\u201d says\u00a0 Shira Karney, FAT\u2019s Assistant Producer. \u201cIt means that the runway and representation of Fashion Art Toronto is to showcase all creatives, designs, and models without any descrimination or \u2018boxes\u2019 to fit into.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, Fashion Art Toronto becomes a unique event that offers its platform, or rather its\u00a0<\/span>runway<\/span><\/i> for all kinds of people, who are not only aspiring designers, but also to aspiring models and everyone else who view fashion as their passion and might not ‘fit’ into a social norm of \u00a0who ‘fashion’ is for.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want a runway full of sharks and aliens? Amazing! Let\u2019s do it! Have people shot you down for modeling because you\u2019re too \u2018this\u2019 or too \u2018that\u2019? Screw \u2018em! Come try it out with us,\u201d Karney says. \u201cOne of the first rules of fashion is that it is a playground, and Fashion Art Toronto works to expand abstract, playful, artistic ranges. Elena Safi or just Safi, which is the name she goes by now, is the designer behind <\/span>Safi Creatives<\/span><\/i>, the upcoming fashion brand that made its debut at Fashion Week in November.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The collection called \u2018Kitoko<\/span> Soul\u2019 was inspired by her mother\u2019s upbringing as she immigrated from Congo to Canada, and the contrast between the two cultures. \u201cJust this year she finally returned home to visit Congo and it made me think about all the various changes in culture that have happened while she was away,\u201d she says. \u201cChanges in western\/Canadian culture and changes in the Congolese traditions that she was accustomed to as a kid. With this idea, I wanted to build a collection that would merge some aspects of African Nature and textiles with my Canadian upbringing.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]\n\t\t\t

I will be going back for more. The lady who was helping me was confused as to why I needed so many yards of upholstery fabric \u2014 especially this print since it wasn\u2019t the most appealing [to her]\u201d Safi says.\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/rs-layer>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Safi explains that upholstery fabric is \"really nice to experiment with since it has a different stiffness and holds onto shapes better.\" \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/rs-layer>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

When I saw it the ideas started flooding my head and I had to have it,\u201d she says. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/rs-layer>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

I also loved the idea of Snow Pants but with African fabrics because they are really two opposites.\u201d \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/rs-layer>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

In 2021 when I was preparing for African Student Fashion Week, I went into Ceektex International, an African textile store, and saw the fabric and fell in love with it,\" she says. \u201cI remember telling the uncle at the cash desk that I would be coming back to buy the fabric and make something out of it. So it was really special to be able to do that a year later.\u201d \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/rs-layer>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
