{"id":5179,"date":"2019-02-14T19:14:51","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T19:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=5179"},"modified":"2019-02-14T19:50:50","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T19:50:50","slug":"first-breastfeeding-station-opens-at-humber-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=5179","title":{"rendered":"First breastfeeding station opens at Humber College"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">H<\/span>umber College becomes the first Canadian campus to open a breast feeding station after the Mamava opened in September.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative began earlier this year after Humber nursing professor Sylwia Wojtalik came across a student breastfeeding in Humber\u2019s bathroom showers.<\/p>\n<p>Wojtalik said <div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-full pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>\u201cpeople don\u2019t eat in the bathroom so they shouldn\u2019t be breastfeeding or expressing milk in the bathroom.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>She said she\u2019s encountered one or two students each semester that have had to leave class to express milk, some students would express milk in the bathroom then discard it because it\u2019s not very hygienic.<\/p>\n<p>Wojtalik worked with Jason Powell, dean of the School of Health Sciences, Jacqueline Anderson Associate Director of Wellness and Development, and former IGNITE president Maja Jocson in an effort to make Humber more accessible.<\/p>\n<p>Mamava is a U.S. based company that creates small freestanding and mobile pods for breastfeeding parents. The Mamava pods can be found in airports and businesses around North America.<\/p>\n<p>Humber\u2019s Mamava pod is located by the entrance of the Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre,\u00a0 and it will be open on week days from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>To access the pod students must go to the SWAC and ask an attendant for a code, inside there are charging stations and two benches so it is available to more than one student at once.<\/p>\n<p>Jacqueline Anderson said that while it effects a <div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-full pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>\u201csmall group it was a big challenge\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p>and thought the Mamava was a \u201cbig investment\u201d it was important for mothers to \u201cfeel welcomed and not have to use the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over 31, 000 full time students attend Humber College, with only 5-6 students using the Mamava daily since its opened.<\/p>\n<p>Guelph-Humber student Marya Alam said \u201ceven if it\u2019s just 5-6 students, they\u2019re still students at Humber and we should take into account how they feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wojtalik encourages discussion, saying \u201cnot everybody feels comfortable breastfeeding in public, but I think it creates more conversation, just the reaction, students looking at outside the Wellness Centre.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Humber College becomes the first Canadian college campus to open a breastfeeding station on campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":74,"featured_media":7412,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0},"categories":[141],"tags":[],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5179"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/74"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=5179"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5179\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/7412"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=5179"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=5179"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=5179"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
