According to Kilfoyle, students who are caught smoking weed are “dealt with in a non-confrontational manner,” while repeat offenders will sometimes be given sanctions.

He said that these sanctions range widely, from having students do a personal risk assessment, to losing access to campus resources such as being banned from certain areas.

Kilfoyle, who has been the director of Public Safety and Emergency Management at the college for four years, said that before any rules or regulations can move forward the college must wait on some “key direction from the Ministry [of Advanced Education and Skills Development].”

However, Kilfoyle said he is concerned about the length of time it might take to get new rules finalized. He said it would be ideal for a policy decision to be made by the end of the year so the college will be prepared for the legalization date. However, formalizing policies “takes time,” he said.

The new legislation will be regulated on the provincial level like alcohol, and will be dispensed from LCBO’s. It will allow users to smoke within a private residence, and the proposed legal age to purchase weed is 19.

Kilfoyle said Humber’s campus will abide by the provincial standard. He also said that he thinks that there will be designated smoking areas for students.

The college has been discussing these new rules ever since the plan for legalization was announced by the federal government in April.

According to Humber’s Dean of Students, Jen McMillen, there have been some internal discussions surrounding the issue.

McMillen said there are some rules that will fall within existing bylaws and legislations. “If people are using cannabis in a form that is smoked it does not supersede [tobacco] smoking laws or bylaws.”

The ones who will ultimately be making the new rules for Humber will be the board of directors; however, McMillen said that there are key stakeholders who will be consulted on the matter. These stakeholders include: the dean of students, The Student Health and Wellness Accessibility Centre, IGNITE and The Department of Public Safety.

One student on campus is quite happy that marijuana is finally being legalized. Humber College student Pablo Colocho said he is excited for the new laws to be implemented.

Colocho is a recreational user who “smokes to relax after a long day.” While he doesn’t agree with every aspect of the legalization of pot, he sees legalization overall to be positive. “Hey, as long as its legalized then its better for everybody.”

With new legislation legalizing weed being passed, Humber College needs to rethink how it handles marijuana use on campus.

[174,141,62
59,186,187,188,196,175
