{"id":714,"date":"2017-11-08T22:45:15","date_gmt":"2017-11-08T22:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=714"},"modified":"2017-11-08T22:45:15","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T22:45:15","slug":"no-more-silence-take-back-the-night-marchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=714","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;No More Silence:&#8221; Take Back the Night Marchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Support for sexual assault survivors was in full effect at Humber College&#8217;s second annual Take Back the Night event.<\/p>\n<p>The event took place on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2017, in the Learning Resource Commons at Humber College&#8217;s north campus. Take Back the Night started off with attenders being asked to inflate the thunder clappers that were provided in order to make noise.<\/p>\n<p>Humber College\u2019s dean of students, Jen McMillen told the crowd of more than 50 that, \u201cMembers of our Humber community continue to experience sexual violence&#8230; we would like it to affect fewer of us in the future.\u201d There were no student survivors that felt comfortable enough to speak out at the event and the dean wanted to change that. McMillen encouraged students to let her know what needed to be done, in order to make the campus safer.<\/p>\n<p>The main speaker, Yamikani Msosa, said it is important to take a stand against sexual violence. Msosa said, \u201cOne in three women will experience some form of sexual violence\u201d and \u201c90 per cent of survivors will never report their experiences.\u201d Msosa said it is important to provide support to survivors: \u201cAll of us are in this together. All of us have a part to play on campus to stop sexual violence.\u201d Msosa said it is important to encourage others about sexual violence and even if they are clueless \u201cwe should use that to educate\u201d and not downplay them.<\/p>\n<p>The march began in front of the LRC and continued down Arboretum Blvd. Supporters and survivors chanted things like \u201cStop the violence no more silence,\u201d and carried signs that said various things like, \u201cWhether it\u2019s night or day assault is not ok.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saffron Aldred, whose sign read, \u201cNo more silence\u201d said, \u201cI was verbally sexually harassed\u2026 I told him to get lost\u2026 I told him it was sexual harassment. You need to be the one to say something because you don\u2019t know how many people that they\u2019ve done that to and they think it\u2019s OK. I\u2019m not gonna take that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nikiesha Clarke, a University of Guelph-Humber student, said, \u201cI feel like I\u2019m a part of the community by supporting survivors. I feel like I can make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ignite vice-president Stokely Lindo said, \u201cWe are not going to be taking this anymore and we are taking back the night. We are taking back all of the emotional hurt that has affected us.
