{"id":717,"date":"2017-11-08T22:58:23","date_gmt":"2017-11-08T22:58:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=717"},"modified":"2018-03-06T22:58:57","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T22:58:57","slug":"etobicokes-centennial-stadium-will-not-be-renamed-after-rob-ford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=717","title":{"rendered":"Etobicoke&#8217;s Centennial Stadium Will Not Be Renamed after Rob Ford"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">F<\/span>ollowing a vote by city council the late Rob Ford will not have Centennial Park Stadium in Etobicoke named after him.<\/p>\n<p>The Ford family\u2019s request was denied after a 24-11 vote by city council against renaming the stadium Rob Ford Memorial Park.<\/p>\n<p>Doug Ford initially put forth the suggestion to rename the stadium in his brother\u2019s honour. Michael Ford, who represents Ward 2 Etobicoke North, was \u201cdisgusted\u201d by city council\u2019s vote.\u00a0 Doug Ford added that \u201cthis was not a surprise.\u201d He said he knew the councillors would vote personal, rather than political.<\/p>\n<p>Councillors who were in favour of renaming the stadium included Mayor John Tory, Ward 3 Councillor Stephen Holyday, Ward 1 Councillor Vincent Crisanti and Ward 38 Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter outlining his recommendation to rename the stadium, Tory said, \u201cIn light of his many years of work on football programs in Etobicoke, it is fitting that city council should rename the football stadium at Centennial Park.\u201d Although in favour of renaming the stadium, Mayor Tory acknowledged Rob Ford\u2019s wrongdoings while in office that were disrespectful and hurtful to some in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Before the vote took place, Councillor Jon Burnside of Ward 26, who was against the idea of renaming the stadium, said there should be a five to 10 year waiting period before memorializing someone. He went on to say that although he appreciated the intention of the proposal, the city\u2019s attention should focus on everyday citizens \u201cwho have dedicated hours of their lives to make our city better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One resident of Etobicoke North, Hareda Fakhrudin, a third year Ryerson University student, said she wasn\u2019t surprised by the vote. \u201cPeople in this city either loved Rob or hated him. There was no in between.\u201d She said that she wouldn\u2019t have been in favour of renaming the stadium because of the backlash Ford received during his time as Mayor. \u201cAs a popular public figure, even if you do great things for your community, the rest of the people will only remember the bad things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five days after the vote, Doug created a petition asking city council to revisit their decision and to allow Centennial Park Stadium to be renamed after the late Rob Ford.<\/p>\n<p>Doug Ford announced on Sept. 8, 2017 that he would be running for Mayor of Toronto for the second time in the next election, which is set to take place on Oct. 20, 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following a vote by city council the late Rob Ford will not have Centennial Park Stadium in Etobicoke named after him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":19,"featured_media":716,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0},"categories":[174,47,89],"tags":[205,207,58,203,206,204],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/717"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/19"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=717"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/717\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/716"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=717"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=717"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=717"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
