Really, it’s about access. One of our main strategic objectives is improving accessibility on campus and I don’t think that there is a reason to limit yourself to on-campus voting,” she said.

All full-time students will receive an email during voting week of February 25 to March 1 to cast their vote digitally.

Seats on the board of directors are among the positions being voted on by students this spring. Guelph-Humber students can choose two candidates to represent their campus. The remaining eight spots are divided between Humber North, Lakeshore and Orangeville campuses.

Nazim said the board of directors act as a liaison between the school and the students. “Directors communicate to students on what’s going on and hold up Ignite’s strategic plan. Each director is responsible for representing their own campus.”

Students will then be able to vote for the vice-president position.

“This is more of an operational, day-to-day positon. This role is to advocate on the student population and work on goals outlined in the strategic plan,” said Nazim.

There are three positions open, one for each campus with the exception of Orangeville. Students can vote for the candidate they want to represent their own campus.

Students across all four campuses can vote for the high-profile position of Ignite president who will represent the entire student body.

“It’s one of those positions that we really want to push to students. It’s ideal if you’re looking to make a change and you’re looking to do some really neat projects to help the student population,” said Nazim.

Ignite has already begun promoting the spring election.

Third year media business student Sam Lindo said she saw Ignite employees in the atrium at Guelph-Humber handing out popcorn to bring attention to the election.

Lindo wants a candidate who listens to what the students want with a true and active voice for the people.

“That’s the whole point, right? Electing someone who is ready to relay the important aspects of school life and is ready to make those changes,” Lindo said.

Second year kinesiology student McKayla Chabot said she has been approached multiple times by candidates looking for signatures.

“I would like to see extended hours at the GH Café and at the gym on weekends,” she said.

Students had the chance to meet candidates running for all positions at a “mix and mingle” on February 13. The presidential candidate session was simulcast through a Facebook livestream between North and Lakeshore campuses, while vice-president and board of director candidates met with students at their own campuses.

Students can vote for the Ignite election starting February 25 at voting booths on campus and electronically through student email.

[174,62
