With the winter weather coming to an end in the foreseeable future, dangerous driving is bound to return to the Humber College campus and surrounding roadways.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But<\/span>\u00a0the college<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>cannot solely police the roadways, says Director of Public Safety<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Rob Kilfoyle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s difficult for us to do that because it is private property, so we don\u2019t have police powers on private property.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0says Kilfoyle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With the Humber College campus not being patrolled, the school has to use surveillance systems to report an issue after the fact<\/span>\u00a0according to the Department of Public Safety policies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

University of Guelph Humber<\/span>\u00a0third-year business\u00a0<\/span>student Nico\u00a0<\/span>Dottori<\/span>\u00a0says he has witnessed dangerous driving on campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEspecially on that main street that goes right through campus, a lot of people like to speed, a lot of them have loud exhausts and try to show off or something. They speed up because their car sounds loud or good.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0says\u00a0<\/span>Dottori<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main streets that\u00a0<\/span>Dottori<\/span>\u00a0refers to are Silver Bell Lane and Arboretum Boulevard, both of which feature long straight portions of road and plenty of pedestrian crosswalks.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kilfoyle says that issues have to be more extreme than simply speeding to get the\u00a0<\/span>police involved.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe can have the police respond to issues of dangerous driving\u00a0because<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that is a criminal offence. If something comes to our attention that could be considered criminal, we can certainly bring in the police and have them investigate.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thomas Edmonds, a Humber College student thinks that there is a lack of awareness for pedestrians on campus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the four way stop by the LRC I see a lot of rolling stops and not watching at the crosswalks.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0says Edmonds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But Edmonds says the roads around campus are just as dangerous.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the lights at the front of the school, lots of people are doing<\/span>\u00a0U-turns<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>right into the crosswalk, it is overall not the safest area.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These dangerous U turns are occurring at the intersection of Humber College Boulevard and\u00a0<\/span>Windwood<\/span>\u00a0Drive, which turns into Silver Bell Lane on campus, which is an intersection many students use to cross into the subdivision across the street.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Edmonds fears the worst for pedestrians having to rely on dangerous and distracted drivers obeying the speed limit on an\u00a0<\/span>honour<\/span>\u00a0system.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone could get hurt.\u201d<\/span> – Thomas\u00a0<\/span>Edmonds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n

Kilfoyle says that in his five years working at Humber nothing major has\u00a0occurred<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on campus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA couple of minor pedestrian<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>being struck\u00a0<\/span>incidents<\/span>, most of that stuff happens off campus on Humber college\u00a0<\/span>Boulevard<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>he says.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If students do see incidents of dangerous driving on campus<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>they are asked to report it to the Department of Public safety, who will investigate.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
