{"id":8339,"date":"2019-10-25T16:48:37","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T16:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=8339"},"modified":"2019-10-25T19:09:08","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T19:09:08","slug":"free-menstrual-products-for-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=8339","title":{"rendered":"Free menstrual products for students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">H<\/span>umber College and the University of Guelph-Humber have started an initiative to give students free menstrual kits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">It\u2019s called \u201cemergency menstrual products on campus,\u201d said Shay Hamilton, vice president of Ignite at Humber\u2019s north campus. Hamilton said Ignite partners with menstrual product companies like Always and Tampax to supply pads and tampons for the initiative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The period products haven\u2019t reached the bathroom quite yet though. Family and community social services student at the University of Guelph-Humber Eden Ventura said she would like the distribution to be more discreet rather than picking it up from an office. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8349\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8349\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8349 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9675-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"poster that tells students about the free menstrual kits \" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9675-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9675-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9675-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9675-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9675-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9675-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_9675.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A period kit that has a few pads and tampons for students who need them.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI think it would probably be more efficient if it was in the bathroom less than like having to go into a random office and pick it up in front of a whole waiting room of people,\u201d said Ventura. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Hamilton said Ignite wants to work out the logistics before the kits go into bathrooms. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to figure out how students are going to get it, how much money is the machine going to cost,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The initiative\u2019s main goal is to help as many students as possible. Hamilton said that the Ignite staff want students to know they\u2019re here for them and that they understand the need for free menstrual products. She said students come into the Ignite office every day to grab a free kit of their own. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Free menstrual products for students is important as \u201csome people don\u2019t necessarily have the resources to go out and buy those packs,\u201d said Leviana Coccia, the communications officer for The Period Purse, a charity which- through education and advocacy- strives to bridge the gap between period products and people who don\u2019t have access to them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-full pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>Coccia said that students shouldn\u2019t be left out of the equation when it comes to period poverty- the gap between period products and people who have limited access to them.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe have to remember that post-secondary education comes with a huge price tag and students are focusing on getting good grades and making sure that they\u2019re paying their OSAP back or paying their tuition on time,\u201d Coccia said. Some students may not be able to put aside the money for period products. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">Hamilton said she isn\u2019t worried about students abusing the free kits. She said, \u201cthe biggest thing is we are all students, our bank accounts aren\u2019t that awesome so, if you have to take like three or two, we understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Coccia said knowing there are period products for students to grab shows them the student union cares about their needs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">To pick up an emergency menstrual kit at Humber North and Humber Lakeshore visit the Ignite Office, LGBTQ+ Resource Centre and Health Centre.
