{"id":8450,"date":"2019-11-01T16:22:25","date_gmt":"2019-11-01T16:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=8450"},"modified":"2021-04-10T00:31:28","modified_gmt":"2021-04-10T00:31:28","slug":"the-wilting-plant-wall-at-guelph-humber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=8450","title":{"rendered":"The wilting plant wall of Guelph-Humber"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The University of Guelph-Humber&#8217;s plant wall suffered a technical glitch in the beginning of September 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">According to Monique Lee, maintenance specialist at Nedlaw Living Walls, the wall\u2019s computer monitoring system falsely read that the wall was getting watered by the pumps. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">As a result, the wall <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">had no water for only a short period of time and it dried ou<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">t, Lee said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Lee said that after Nedlaw maintenance workers shook the dead leaves off the plants, new buds eventually grew in.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-full pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>\u201cFor plant walls or any plant in any horticultural system, when there&#8217;s no water, plants are stressed,\u201d Lee said, \u201ctheir immune system is compromised.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The biofilter plant wall was installed in Guelph-Humber by Nedlaw Living Walls in 2004.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The wall uses its plants to filter and clean the air to heal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">sick building syndrome, in which poor ventilation conditions affect stress of students and staff, Lee said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Some students who see the wall have said it has a positive impact on them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Shelby Lafreniere, a visiting Seneca College student said, \u201cI think it&#8217;s really soothing to look at. I got up to go get food and when I saw it, I actually felt happier.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Jimmy Vincent, the coordinator of camps, education and community outreach at the Humber Arboretum said, \u201ctropicals are very, very difficult plants to grow in the first place. So when you\u2019re trying to grow them in such a precarious growing condition, sometimes there can be challenges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> Vincent mentioned how impressed he is with how the plant wall is\u00a0 currently being maintained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The plant wall is completely integrated into the ventilation system of the building, but the ventilation system has not been affected by the drying out of the wall, as it has been hydrated since the technical glitch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">According to Lee, the plant wall is connected to the ventilation system; the air flows in and out of there and the plants detoxify the air.
