The University of Guelph Humber\u2019s no smoking policy may not be as strict as the signs around campus would like students to believe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On Jan. 1, 2019, students got word of the new smoking rules through emails and signs around the school.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Prior to Jan. 1, smoking was allowed on campus as long as smokers were at least nine metres away from any school entrances or exits.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Since the new policy came into effect, staff say that security guards at the school have been told to tell smokers to either put out their cigarettes or to smoke off campus.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The policy doesn\u2019t only refer to smoking cigarettes, but cannabis and e-cigarettes as well.<\/p>\n

Alessandra Di Bona, a second year psychology student at the University of Guelph Humber says she smokes on campus often.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The policy she says, has not affected her. \u201cNo one says anything.\u201d she says as she took a drag of her cigarette at the Guelph-Humber entrance.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rob Kilfoyle, director of security at Humber College, says that they \u201cdid a little blitz at the beginning, but it\u2019s been an ongoing struggle trying to police the policy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kilfoyle says that during the policy\u2019s infancy, some security staff were \u201con designated smoking patrols.\u201d Though he says that security were not able to sustain those roles for the whole semester.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a lot of other things to be doing, so it\u2019s not something we can stay right on top of.\u201d says Kilfoyle.

\u201cThe reality is there\u2019s no real teeth to the policy. We could give you a violation notice, and if you get a few of those you can be brought in front of the conduct office. But, you know, in terms of degrees of what is super bad, it [smoking] is not high up there.\u201d \u00a0 <\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n

Kilfoyle says that the school isn\u2019t trying to be heavy handed, but to take a more proactive and educational approach to the dangers of smoking.<\/p>\n

Kilfoyle says that there still isn\u2019t a day that goes by where he doesn\u2019t have to address a student smoking on campus.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWe need compliance,\u201d Kilyfoyle says. \u201cThe more non-compliant you are, the more likely you are to receive some discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Humber College\u2019s health and safety manager, Margaret Fung, those disciplines might come in the form of written warnings, but it doesn\u2019t happen often.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fung says she has \u201conly received respectful responses\u201d from students she has personally asked to toss their cigarette butts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fung says that \u201csmoking in front of Humber\u2019s LRC has been totally eliminated\u201d, but she is<\/p>\n

\u201cunsure of how much smoking is going on in other areas,\u201d such as Guelph Humber\u2019s campus.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Di Bona says \u201cPeople know about the rules, they just don\u2019t care. From my experience, neither do the security guards.\u201d<\/p>\n
