{"id":8831,"date":"2019-11-23T17:48:57","date_gmt":"2019-11-23T17:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=8831"},"modified":"2019-11-23T17:51:58","modified_gmt":"2019-11-23T17:51:58","slug":"is-it-worth-it-to-be-a-student-athlete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gh360.ca\/?p=8831","title":{"rendered":"Is it worth it to be a student athlete?"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">P<\/span>laying sports while in school isn\u2019t easy, according to three student athletes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Miea Campbell-Johnson, a power forward on Humber\u2019s women\u2019s basketball team said that with practice every day and 10 away games per season, it\u2019s sometimes hard to balance schoolwork, basketball and staying mentally healthy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t tend to stress when it comes to schoolwork. As soon as [an assignment] is handed out, I get a head start on it, make sure I\u2019m not leaving it to the last minute,\u201d Campbell-Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When school and basketball become too overwhelming, sleeping and hanging out with her friends is Campbell-Johnson\u2019s go to form of escape.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Layefsky said she found it extremely difficult staying mentally healthy while studying and playing basketball at Nipissing University.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was ready to quit,\u201d Layefsky said. \u201cWhen I got back from Christmas break, I was so burnt out, I had never felt that done before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Layefsky played one season for Nipissing, quitting because of the overwhelming stress. After playing basketball for over 12 years she decided to retire from the sport. \u201cI just didn\u2019t love basketball anymore,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Humber College soccer player Rebecca Spratt said it\u2019s hard balancing schoolwork and practice. She said she believes the key to staying mentally heathy while playing sports and going to school is being organized and managing her time wisely.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have my Google calendar app on my phone, on my computer. I have a written agenda, so just staying organized and always planning in the time for yourself that you need is important,\u201d Spratt said. \u00a0She said making sure she has a balance between soccer, school and self-time is important to staying mentally healthy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely gets overwhelming working, going to school and then soccer but I think what makes it easy, is I have a good support system, when I am overwhelmed, I\u2019m just the type of person where I need to talk about it,\u201d Spratt said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Spratt and Campbell-Johnson were both able to balance being full-time students while playing their respective sports. They are both currently in their fourth year of school.
