How To Make A Cocktail On A Student Budget

A draught at Humber College’s on-campus bar, LinX, is leaving students to craft their own cocktails after a long school week.

However, a lot of students aren’t sure how to make their own drinks.

This how-to article will show students how to make the popular cocktail, the Mimico Mule, in the comfort of their own home.

Meagan Brazeau, a third-year Humber College student doesn’t know how to make any cocktails. Since LinX is no longer an option, she discovered it’s hard to find a quiet place to have a drink and hangout. So, she wants to entertain at her home but doesn’t know how to make any cocktails.

Students should have a quick, easy and delicious drink that they can make on their own for a cheap price.

After various hours of research, the popular cocktail “Mimico Mule” proved to be the best option for students who want to make their own drinks.

A survey conducted with 50 students showed that the majority of them prefer a vodka-based drink, mixed with soda that uses cheap ingredients. All of these elements scream the mule’s name.

The Wild Pigeon, a bar whose audience is mainly students from nearby post-secondary schools, has a variety of drinks that fit student’s criteria, including the Mimico Mule. “We serve drinks, such as the mule, that are affordable and delicious.” says owner of The Wild Pigeon and drink expert, Alex Nagribianko.

He made three cocktail suggestions that are very popular among the students they serve.

The first drink suggested was the vodka soda. While this drink is simplistic and delicious, it lacks a certain ‘wow-factor’.

The next drink up for debate was the Caesar. The problem with a Caesar is that it’s too complex to make, and tomato juice is not for everyone. So, the drink isn’t very inclusive.

Another drink suggested that is close to the student’s criteria is the “Canadian Mojito.” The reason it wasn’t chosen is because of the longevity of its key ingredient, mint. Mint is something that few students have in their homes and it can go bad quickly. Also, when making drinks in a pinch, it makes the Canadian Mojito not the most viable option.

The drink that best fits the student selection of an affordable vodka cocktail suggested by Nagribianko is the “Mimico Mule”. This drink contains vodka, freshly squeezed lime juice, and ginger beer. Three simple ingredients that work together perfectly to form a delicious drink.

What You'll Need

Jahalya Benight, mixologist and professor for BartenderOne bartending school, says the Mimico Mule is a great drink of choice for students. “A lot of students don’t understand the flavouring with vodka, and they like the mule because its mostly ginger beer.”

There are several perks to making drinks, such as the Mimico Mule, at home. Perhaps the biggest upside to making this cocktail at home is the massive savings it will have on your wallet. Even if the plan is to go out, students can save some serious money by having some homemade cocktails before-hand.

Another benefit to mixing cocktails in the comfort of your own home is the ability to socialize with your friends. When trying to speak in a club or bar setting, often the music is far too loud to hear one another. By hosting friends at your own home not only are you able to truly converse, but you also control the music volume and selection.

No need to look any further, the Mimico Mule is the perfect cocktail for students to make at home. Its ingredients are few in numbers, cheap, and easy to find. Mostly importantly, the mule is an easy to make cocktail that will definitely impress guests at the next end-of-week get together.
