University of Guelph-Humber is planning Study Abroad courses for 2021 despite current federal government global travel advisories.

There is a global travel advisory in place which says to avoid all non-essential travel outside of Canada until further notice to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The Study Abroad page says the university is monitoring the ongoing situation with COVID-19 and students will get a refund on their deposit in the event of cancellations.

Ken Turriff manager of communications and public relations at University of Guelph-Humber said plans will not go ahead if current travel advisories remain in place. He said the university plans to “err on the side of caution” and they expect to make a final decision on Study Abroad in early 2021.

The courses planned for the 2020 summer semester were cancelled due to travel restrictions put in place by the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are over 15 trips planned for next year and destinations include Japan, New Zealand and various countries in Europe.  There are currently border restrictions in place for foreign nationals looking to enter countries like Japan and New Zealand where travel is reserved for exceptional or critical circumstances.

The 2021 Study Abroad courses also include destinations in the United Kingdom where travelers must provide journey and contact details. Travelers to the country must also self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival.

There are exceptions to this rule for those coming from certain countries or territories. Travelers from Canada to Scotland and England, where one course is planned for 2021, are currently not exempt from self-isolation.

Several virtual information sessions about Study Abroad courses for 2021 were planned for early October.
