The growing popularity of bubble tea, which is a Taiwanese tea-based drink, has led to many independent and chain restaurants popping up around the Greater Toronto Area.

Bubble teas fall under two categories: teas, and milk teas, which can be substituted for lactose-free options including almond, soy and coconut milk. They come in a choice of green, black or oolong (black dragon) tea.

There are a variety of bubble tea flavours and can be served with different toppings like tapioca pearls, also called bobas.

Bobas are small starch balls that can consist of potato powder, sweet potato powder or jelly and they are soaked in a sugar syrup to make them sweet.

The bobas are used to add texture to these flavourful drinks.

Another topping that is commonly found is jelly, which comes in different types of colours and shapes.
