If students walked through the second floor of the University of Guelph-Humber building and looked to the left, they’d probably notice that the cafe is closed. Alex Hoa, retail services officer, said they are planning to open in winter 2022.
In the meantime, students have made their own lunch or walked to Humber College. Here are some alternative choices around campus while students wait.
For lunch, students said they would often say sandwiches and baked goods like cookies from the GH cafe. Starbucks at the north Humber is a campus came up as a place students like to eat at.
Second-year media student Isabella says she like Starbucks because it’s “a good alternative to have. I like the drinks there.”
The Street Cafe, that is around the intersection of GH and Humber is another place that came up. Third-year student Nicole Costin chose The Street Cafe because she wanted to explore other food options. “I’ve seen many food choices there. There aren’t many here.”
While it is fine staying on-campus, if GH students want more variety, then going off-campus will be beneficial because there are a lot of choices.
Another benefit of going off-campus and are a lot of these restaurants close later than restaurants on campus which is good for students who attend late night classes. They can also order by phone, and online with their app or third-party delivery (Uber Eats, Skip The Dishes, and Door Dash).
First, there is the McDonald’s at Carrier Drive. Third-year family & communications social services student Sarah Singh recommends going because it has “some variety” compared around GH and Humber. Another place is Harvey’s at Finch Avenue. Second-year childhood studies student Emily Galati, recommends it because it’s inexpensive and “something different.”
There are other popular food chains at Finchwood Plaza such as Tim Hortons, Subway, and Burger King. It also has Indian restaurants, Desi Spice and Osmow’s Shawarma, Honest Restaurant Etobicoke, Mr. Greek and Pizza Hub.
If students want places closer to the university then Humber 27 Plaza should be a fitting place for them. In the plaza, there are a variety of restaurants to choose from. There is a pizza place City South Pizza, sushi place, Hoya Sushi. If students are tired of Ackee Tree, and want to explore other Caribbean food, Flava Ceen and Callaloo Taste of Caribbean are great places to try.
Now it looks like the GH cafe is coming back. That’s good because some students call it inconvenient it’s closed.
“It’s inconvenient,” says Stephen Pickett, third-year media student. “I have to do my work around the library or study hall.”
“It inconvenient because there’s not many food options around the campus besides Starbucks.”, says fourth-year media student Jessica Liqourich.
